Sydney R. Marovitz, 78, a Chicago attorney for more than 50 years and c
ommissioner emeritus of the Chicago Park District, was a member of the p
ark district board from 1974 to 1986. He was the father of State Sen. W
illiam Marovitz (D., Chicago) and the brother of federal judge Abraham L
incoln Marovitz.
Services for Mr. Marovitz, a resident of the Peterson Park neighborhood
, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the chapel at 3019 W. Peterson A
ve. He died Sunday at home after a long bout with cancer.
`TMHe was a hands-on park commissioner,`TM Sen. Marovitz said. `TMHe loved k
ids and he enjoyed going out to various parks and watching them play. H
e had to see and visit the parks to make certain they were kept up. He t
old people to let him know if they were not. He wanted to be reported t
o, so he could take full responsibility. He felt he was there to help o
ther people.`TM
Mr. Marovitz began practicing law in 1934 with his brothers, Abraham, n
ow senior U.S. District Court judge, and Harold. Until his death he was a p
artner in the law firm now known as Marovitz, Powell and Edelstein.
Mr. Marovitz, a longtime Democratic precinct captain, was politically a
ctive in the party all of his adult life. He was appointed park distric
t commissioner by Mayor Richard J. Daley.
He was made park commissioner emeritus earlier this year, the first to b
e awarded that title.
Mr. Marovitz was a founder and former executive vice president of the G
eorge and Anna Portes Cancer Prevention Center. He was also a founder o
f the Bernard Horwich Jewish Community Center. He was past president of N
er Tamid Congregation.
In 1987, he was awarded the 40th Anniversary of Israel Medal of the Sta
te of Israel Bonds.
Survivors, besides his son and brothers, include his wife, Jean, and an
