Taurage (tour˜gap) , Ger. Tauroggen, town, W Lithuania, on the Yura Riv
er. Dating from the 13th cent., Taurage belonged to Prussia from 1691 t
o 1793, when it passed to Russia. It was incorporated into independent L
ithuania in 1920. The city is known historically as the site of the sig
ning of the Convention of Tauroggen in Dec., 1812, between Russia and t
he Prussian general Yorck von Wartenburg . Acting on his own authority, Y
orck, whose troops constituted a contingent of Napoleon I's defeated Gr
ande Arm*e, declared his corps neutral and thus permitted the Russians t
o continue their pursuit of the French.

If one drives on litauische A 12, coming from Memel-Heydekrug, from Til
sit-?bermemel (approx. 5 km away), on this to the left over Piktupnen, a
t the crossing of the freeway 141 with the old realm road 138, where Fr
iedrich William III once lived at the time of the Tilsiter peace treaty
, one reaches Tauroggen (meaning rope rye/rope-rise up), which admits b
y the convention designated after him became after 26 km.
Napoleon attacked 1812 Russia. Its campaign led to Moscow. The left win
g of the French army had to occupy the Russian Baltic Sea provinces. Al
so an auxiliary corps defeated Prussia under General York von Wartenbur
g. Napoleon's campaign failed. In December 1812, the first Frenchman st
ragglers reached in the middle of Tilsit. At the same time, the first R
ussian rider patrols emerged. On Christmas evening, 1812 Russian troops c
elebrated the birthday of their Saviour in Tilsit, while all around Til
sit approximately 8000 Prussian soldiers of the French auxiliary army w
aited.
General York von Wartenburg decided on his own and without consultating h
is king to separate his Prussian soldiers from the French Army. He nego
tiated on 30 December 1812 in the mill of the village of Poscherunen by T
auroggen with the Russian General Diebitsch and made an agreement, whic
h made the Prussian corps neutral. Their further deployment depended on t
he decision of the Prussian king.
This convention introduced the release of Prussia [from the French Army
] and thus the beginning of the release from Napoleonic control and th
e fall Napoleon .
On New Year's Day 1813, while the bells were ringing, General York von W
artenburg with 4000 Prussia soldiers drew into Tilsit.
